As of December 18, 2014, drivers are no longer required to fill out daily vehicle inspection reports (DVIR) following a post-trip vehicle inspection when no equipment failure or safety concerns are present. Although, if a driver does identify equipment failure or safety concerns, they are then required to complete a DVIR form.
The revised regulation does not apply to drivers of passenger-carrying vehicles. The action of a pre-trip and post-trip inspection to discover any equipment failure or safety concerns is still required.
Although the FMCSA has changed this regulation, many companies will continue to complete the DVIR’s for all post-trip inspections. As an effort to continue operating in a proactive manner in minimizing risk of operating unsafe vehicles, and to stay on top of maintenance.
